HC Deb 28 February 1881 vol 258 c1863
MR. A. GRANT

asked the Secretary to the Treasury, Whether, in view of the difference of opinion existing in the herring trade and throughout Scotland on the subject, Her Majesty's Government will consent to the appointment of a Select Committee to inquire into the expediency of the further continuance of the present system of Government Inspection and certificate, by means of a brand, in the herring curing trade on the East Coast of Scotland?

LORD FREDERICK CAVENDISH

Sir, as far as I can ascertain, there is a very general wish among the representatives of districts interested in the herring fisheries that there should be a new inquiry into the expediency of continuing the herring brand. If, therefore, a Motion is made for the appointment of such a Committee, the Government will consent to it.

MR. R. W. DUFF

said, in consequence of the answer of his noble Friend, he had no objection to refer the whole question to a Committee, Notice for the appointment of which already stood in his name.

LORD FREDERICK CAVENDISH

said, the Motion of the hon. Member was restricted to one narrow point of this subject; but if he amended his Motion he (Lord Frederick Cavendish) would consent to it.
