HC Deb 10 February 1881 vol 258 c496
MR. ONSLOW

asked the Secretary of State for India, Whether the Government now intend to lay upon the Table of the House a translation of the documents found at Cabul; and, whether, before their production, the Government would take moans to have their translation verified?

THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTON

Sir, in accordance with the promise which has already been given, the Government do intend to lay on the Table of the House translations of the Russian documents which have been found at Cabul. Those documents were, I believe, carefully translated in India with the assistance of the most competent persons whose services the Indian Government were able to secure. To refer them back to India for verification would, in all probability, be to cause a delay of some weeks if not months, and we have no reason to think that such a step is necessary.
