HC Deb 12 August 1881 vol 264 c1818

Order for Second Reading read.

Motion made, and Question proposed, "That the Bill be now read a second time."—(Mr. Attorney General.)

SIR R. ASSHETON CROSS

asked whether, under all the circumstances of the case, the Government would not withdraw that part of the Bill which related to the patronage of the Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and the Chief Baron of the Exchequer?

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (Sir HENRY JAMES)

said, the Government had fulfilled a pledge they gave as to this matter, and were prepared to discuss it now. If it was not dealt with now the patronage would remain with these Courts until next Spring. The Government having fulfilled their pledge would leave the matter in the hands of the House; and if the Government agreed to postpone the discussion, it must be understood that they did so in deference to the wish of the House.

SIR R. ASSHETON CROSS

said, there could be no objection taken to the action of the Government; but he hoped they would agree to leave this matter to be dealt with next Session.

Second reading deferred till Monday next.
