HC Deb 05 April 1881 vol 260 c755
MR. CARINGTON

asked the Secretary of State for War, What will be the conditions under which Majors of the Royal Artillery and of the Royal Engineers who were promoted to that rank before October 1, 1877, will be compulsorily retired?

MR. CHILDERS

As there has been a good deal of misapprehension on this subject, I will at once say that Majors of the Artillery and Engineers appointed before October 1, 1877, will be retired at 50. The seven years' rule does not now apply, nor is it intended to make it applicable to them.
