HC Deb 01 April 1881 vol 260 c473
MR. SEXTON

gave Notice that, on Monday, he would ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether his attention has been called to the accounts in the newspapers of the evictions taking place in the West of Ireland since the passing of the Coercion Act; and, whether, in view of that state of things, pending the introduction of the measure to strengthen the legal position of the Irish tenant, Her Majesty's Government will continue to use the armed forces of the Crown to assist in perpetration of barbarities of that kind?

MR. W. E. FORSTER,

in reply, said, that he would be surprised if the statements referred to by the hon. Member were correct; if so, the matter should be inquired into. He would send the Question over to Ireland to-night for inquiry, and if the hon. Member would put in on Tuesday, he would give as full an answer as he could get.
