HC Deb 01 April 1881 vol 260 c460
MR. SUMMERS

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether there is any foundation for the statement of the Gold Coast correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian," to the effect that the Lieutenant Governor has demanded from King Mensah an indemnity of 500 ounces of gold in order to recoup to some extent the expenses incurred in the recent war preparations; and, whether it is intended, as stated by the same correspondent, that a demonstration of the Colonial forces shall take place at Prahsue?

MR. GRANT DUFF

Sir, neither of these statements is confirmed by any information which has reached Her Majesty's Government.
