§ MR. GOURLEYasked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, If he will be good enough to inform the House how far the negotiations for peace which are reported to have been instituted by General Roberts with the Chief Mahomed Jan, have been successful, or otherwise; and, if he can state what prospects there are of an early termination of hostilities in the various Provinces of Afghanistan, and the terms upon which Her Majesty's Government hope to conclude peace?
§ THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUERI am not in a position to answer the last part of the Question; but, in regard to the first, I can only say that General Sir Frederick Roberts is now taking all possible steps to ascertain the precise state of affairs at Ghuznee. The Government, however, have nothing to report in regard to negotiations with Mahomed Jan.
