HC Deb 01 March 1880 vol 251 c24
MR. A. MILLS

asked the Vice President of the Council, Whether his attention has been called to the inconvenience and expense occasioned by the nomination of candidates for School Boards in their absence and without their consent, and to the evils thereby involved of useless contests at the cost of the ratepayers; and, whether it is in the power of the Education Department, under the provisions of the Act of 1870, to frame such regulations as might remedy this evil without further legislation?

LORD GEORGE HAMILTON

There have been thousands of School Board elections held under the provisions of the Act of 1870, and in no case has the attention of the Education Department been directed to the inconvenience complained of by my hon. Friend. Until, therefore, we have some practical proof before us of the reality of this complaint we should not be disposed to alter the existing regulations.
