HC Deb 29 June 1880 vol 253 c1120
MR. A. M'ARTHUR

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether he will inquire into the truth of a statement made in the "Christian Express," published at the Lovedale Institution in South Africa, that the body of the Chief Moirosi had been dreadfully mutilated, and his head carried off for scientific purposes by a Negro attached to the Cape Mounted Rifles.

MR. GRANT DUFF

, in reply, said, that it was quite clear that the body of Moirosi was buried the day after his mountain was taken; but, so far back as January last, a statement came to the knowledge of the then Secretary of State to the effect that his head had been removed for anatomical purposes. He immediately, of course, gave orders by telegraph that the head should be decently interred with the other remains, and soon afterwards a telegram was received stating that the order had been carried into effect.
