HC Deb 10 June 1880 vol 252 c1614
MR. W. M. TORRENS

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, If any instructions have been sent to our Consul General in Egypt to remonstrate against the arbitrary arrest of many petitioners to the International Commission of Liquidation, and particularly against that of Hassam Mousa-el-Accad, seized at night and cast into prison for signing a Petition to the Commissioners?

SIR CHARLES W. DILKE

Information has been received that the person referred to in the hon. Member's Question has been arrested. The Petition which he presented to the Commission was couched in very violent language against the Egyptian Government, and was in consequence returned to the writer. In these circumstances, Her Majesty's Government have no intention of protesting against the action of the Egyptian Government in the matter. We have no information that any other arrests have been made.
