MR. SULLIVANasked the Postmaster General, If he will lay upon the Table of the House Copies of all Correspondence relating to the appointment to a recent vacancy in the Postmistress-ship of Emyvale, county Monaghan, and of all applications, memorials, and. recommendations relating thereto; and, whether the Government propose henceforth to make appointments to this branch of the public service solely on the grounds of superior qualifications?
§ LORD JOHN MANNERSSir, the sub-post-office at Emyvale is not in my gift, but in that of the Treasury. The Treasury having failed to make any appointment, it was necessary the Post Office should do so; and, after making the proper inquiries, the Surveyor appointed Mr. Geddes. There is nothing, so far as I know, in the Correspondence connected with the appointment to justify it being made public. With regard to the second part of the Question of the hon. and learned Gentleman, there is no intention of making any alteration in the mode of appointment.
