PLUNKETasked the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether, having regard to the Report of the Dublin University Commission (1878), Her Majesty's Government is prepared to make any proposals with a view to the future management and support of the Divinity School, connected with Trinity College and the University of Dublin.
§ MR. J. LOWTHERSir, this is a subject with respect to which, I am aware, very great interest is felt in Ireland; but I am afraid that, considering the demands on the time at the disposal of the Government, it would not be justified in undertaking to introduce a Bill during the present Sesston, especially as the result of holding out any such expectations, with a very uncertain prospect of being able to carry them into effect, might very probably throw obstacles in the way of those who might otherwise be prepared to move in the matter themselves. I think, therefore, it may be left to them.
