HC Deb 24 July 1879 vol 248 c1169
MR. HANBURY (for Sir CHARLES RUSSELL)

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, What action the Government will take upon, the recommendation of the Select Committee on "Hall-Marking (Gold and Silver);" and, in the event of the duties being lowered or abolished, when the change in the law will come into operation; and, whether rebate will be allowed on the stocks of new plate held by the trade?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

Sir, in answer to my hon. Friend, I can only say that, at present, the Government have no intention of proposing any reduction in, or the abolition of, the duties on gold and silver.
