HC Deb 21 July 1879 vol 248 c848
MR. H. B. SHERIDAN

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether information has reached him that, at Derby, in consequence of the searching or mode of searching certain persons taken to the police station charged with furious driving, a conflict ensued which ended in loss of life; and, whether, under these circumstances, he will cause some inquiry to be made as to the necessity of stripping and searching persons, male and female, not charged with actual crime?

MR. ASSHETON CROSS

, in reply, said, some disturbance of the character indicated by the first part of the Question had taken place; but as the matter would become the subject of a trial for murder he would refrain from expressing any opinion upon it. He had instructed the Inspectors of Constabulary to inquire into and report upon the latter part of the Question.
