HC Deb 03 July 1879 vol 247 cc1279-80
MR. BAXTER

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Why Mr. Field, a British subject, has not yet been paid the sum awarded to him five years ago in consequence of an illegal seizure of his property on board the German brig " Marie Louise," in the Sulu Seas, by a Spanish gunboat; and, if Her Majesty's Minister at Madrid has been requested to ask the Spanish Government to send out instructions to Manilla for the settlement of this claim?

MR. BOURKE

On the 26th of March last Mr. West was instructed to call the attention of the Spanish Government to the fact that the indemnity awarded to Mr. Field for his losses by the seizure of the Marie Louise in September, 1877, still remained unpaid. He was further told to request that the matter might be speedily settled. No answer has yet been received from the Spanish Government to that representation, and instructions have been sent to Mr. West to repeat the complaint.
