HC Deb 10 May 1878 vol 239 cc1692-3
MR. KNATCHBULL-HUGESSEN

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether any fresh information has reached Her Majesty's Government relative to the proceedings in South Africa?

SIR MICHAEL HICKS-BEACH

Sir, we have to-day received the following telegram from Sir Bartle Frere, dated the 16th of April:— General Thesiger's operations for clearing Amatolas were quite successful, but detached robber bands will continue for some time extremely troublesome, and give full work to every one. Gongabelle taken prisoner. Sir Theophilus Shepstone's account of Transvaal rather improved. Boers' meeting to receive memorials regarding annexation of Transvaal lasted three days; passed over quietly. Appointed Kruger and Joubert to return to England.
