HC Deb 21 March 1878 vol 238 cc1748-9
SIR GEORGE CAMPBELL

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, If Her Majesty's Government see their way to any arrangement by which the bloodshed and destruction now going on in the Greek Provinces of Turkey maybe stayed till their position is considered by the European Congress and effect is given to the administrative autonomy which it is understood that the Porte has already engaged to concede?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

Sir, all that I can say upon this subject is that it has engaged the anxious attention of Her Majesty's Government, and that we are doing all that lies in our power with the Turkish Government to prevent the operations of war being carried on in a manner inconsistent with the usages of civilized and reasonable warfare, and that we will watch for any opportunity which may occur to enable us to assist in bringing these matters to an end. But I am not able to give any positive information on the subject.
