HC Deb 21 March 1878 vol 238 c1742
MR. POTTER

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether the Government is in possession of any information as to the result of the partial census recently taken in Mysore and other famine-stricken districts of India, with a view to ascertain the mortality occasioned by the food scarcity; and, if so, whether he is prepared to communicate it to the House?

LORD GEORGE HAMILTON,

in reply, said, the Government had no information on the subject; but he believed they would shortly receive some information, in which case he could not conceive that there would be any objection to lay it before the House. The special attention of the Commission appointed to inquire into the administration of famine relief in Mysore and Madras had been directed to this point, as there was some reason to believe that the figures published on the subject were not altogether reliable.
