FRASER-MACKINTOSHasked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether, in view of the vacancy in the honorary office of Lord Clerk Register for Scotland, Government will, as was done for several years without detriment to the public service, carry out the provisions of the statute 24 & 25 Vic. c. 71, s. 1, which enacts that
from and after the passing of this Act no salary or fees shall he payable for or in respect of the said office?
§ THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUERSir, I do not know whether the hon. Gentleman is aware—but certainly his Question does not disclose the fact to the House—that the provisions of the Act to which he refers were virtually overridden by a subsequent Statute—namely, the 31 & 32 Viet. The point is now under the consideration of the Government; and I cannot, at the present moment, give any definite answer to the hon. Gentleman as to what their decision may be.
