HC Deb 24 June 1878 vol 241 c127
MR. MARK STEWART

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether the Indian Government has given its assent to Clause 3 of Section 3 of the Chefoo Convention, which proposes a new arrangement for the regulation of the import of opium into China, and when this new arrangement will come into operation?

MR. E. STANHOPE

Sir, Her Majesty's Government have decided to approve formally the Chefoo Convention, except the clauses relating to the collection of "lekin" upon opium, and the limits of the area to be exempted from that tax. These subjects are still under consideration.
