§ SIR HENRY SELWIN-IBBETSONsaid, he opposed the Amendment, on the ground that its practical effect would be to place the Metropolitan Police under the Metropolitan Board of Works. The Metropolitan Police were a distinct body, acting under the Secretary of State; and he was of opinion that no such authority as that which it was asked to confer on the Metropolitan Board of Works ought to be introduced in a Bill of this kind.
