HC Deb 18 February 1878 vol 237 c1849
DR. WARD

asked the Secretary of State for War, If he will state what was the number of candidates for the recent examination for the Army Medical Department, and what was the number of vacancies advertised?

MR. GATHORNE HARDY,

in reply, said, there were 40 vacancies, and, he regretted to say, only 19 candidates. That was a very unsatisfactory state of things, but he would make inquiries into the subject. The hon. Member for Salisbury (Dr. Lush) had given Notice of a Question for to-morrow night, and he would ask that hon. Gentleman to postpone it until the inquiries were made.
