§ SIR CHARLES W. DILKEasked the Vice President of the Committee of Council on Education, Whether his attention has been called to Memorials on the subject of musical instruction in 1528 public Elementary Schools, lately addressed to the Council by the Bishop of Manchester and others; and, whether he proposes to take any steps with a view to the revision of the system of musical instruction which now exists?
§ LORD GEORGE HAMILTONSir, I have read the Memorials alluded to, calling attention to the present system of musical instruction in public elementary schools. We propose to send Mr. Hullah, our Inspector of Music, as soon as the musical examinations of this year are over, on a tour of inspection abroad, in order that he may investigate and report upon the system of musical instruction in vogue in France, Germany, Austria, and other foreign countries. Until we have received his Report, it would be premature to take into consideration, with a view to revision, the present system of musical instruction.
