HC Deb 27 March 1877 vol 233 c547
MR. ERRINGTON

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether there is any such immediate prospect of legislation with regard to the office of Coroner in Ireland as to render it inexpedient that elections to that office should for the present take place; if not, whether he will direct that such elections should be held as usual?

SIR MICHAEL HICKS - BEACH

I am not aware that there is any immediate prospect of legislation with regard to the office of coroner in Ireland; but I have no power to interfere in the elections of coroners, and it is not my duty to give any directions with regard to them. If a vacancy in the office of coroner be duly reported to the Lord Chancellor, a fresh election is mandatory, and I am informed that the warrant for a fresh election to a vacancy which recently occurred in the hon. Member's county was signed by the Commissioners of the Great Seal some time ago, in the temporary absence of the Lord Chancellor in London.
