MR. GATHORNE HARDYsaid, that on Monday evening he had made a statement respecting Sir John Adye which had been variously reported. He had not meant to express his opinion as adverse to the claims of the Indian Majors, but had been, in fact, the medium of communication between the India Office and the War Office, without being in favour of the course pursued. Some of the reports might possibly have produced a contrary impression.
