HC Deb 13 February 1877 vol 232 c258
MR. POTTER

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether the Government intend to take steps to abolish the Duty on rice imported into Ceylon; also the Tax on the growth of rice, commonly called the Paddy Tax, and the revenue farming of the same in that island?

MR. J. LOWTHER

Sir, a Committee has already been appointed by the Government of Ceylon (in consequence of a Motion introduced into the local Council) for the purpose of inquiring into this question. Until the Report has been received, no action can, of course, be taken in the matter by Her Majesty's Government.
