HC Deb 13 April 1877 vol 233 c1076
MR. J. HOLMS

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, If his attention has been drawn to a telegram which appears in the "Times" of yesterday from Brussels, giving an extract from the "Nord" newspaper, in which it is stated that Lord Derby has sent to Constantinople, not a despatch, but a letter declaring categorically that the Porte must not rely in any way upon England; and, if he will inform the House if this statement was correct?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

The hon. Gentleman called my attention to the telegram yesterday, and I have made inquiries at the Foreign Office. I am informed there is no foundation for the statement in the Nord.
