HC Deb 13 April 1877 vol 233 c1070
MR. RYLANDS

(for Dr. LUSH) asked the First Lord of the Admiralty, If he will give the date when the outbreak of scurvy in the recent Arctic Expedition was first reported to the Admiralty after the arrival of the ships off Ireland; the dates when the promotion of Officers of the Expedition was made; and the date at which the First Lord of the Admiralty called upon the Director General of the Medical Department of the Navy for a report on the causes of the outbreak of scurvy?

MR. A. F. EGERTON,

in reply, said, the outbreak of scurvy in the Arctic Expedition was first reported to the Admiralty by telegram and letter on the 27th of October, 1876. The date of the promotion of officers of the Expedition was the 3rd of November, 1876, except that of Dr. Colam, which was dated March 11, 1877, and the date at which the First Lord of the Admiralty called upon the Director General of the Medical Department of the Navy for the Report referred to was the 9th of November, 1876. Dr. Colam's promotion was not entirely in the same category as that of the other officers, as it did not take place until a vacancy occurred.
