HC Deb 30 May 1876 vol 229 cc1417-8
GENERAL SHUTE

asked the Secretary of State for War, Whether any measures have been taken regarding a revised Militia Ballot Act; and, if any, then what progress has been made in giving effect to such measures in order to remedy the slow action of the present Act and its unequal pressure on the people? The hon. and gallant Gentleman explained that he did not mean to imply that there was any immediate necessity for a Militia Ballot. He only wished to know what would be done in case of a great national emergency.

MR. GATHORNE HARDY

In reply to my hon. and gallant Friend, I have to inform him that a draft Bill has been prepared, but no steps further have been taken in respect to it pending the Report of a Committee which is sitting upon the Militia at the present time.
