HC Deb 20 March 1876 vol 228 cc266-7
MR. HERBERT

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether he would lay upon the Table a Return showing the number of cases of murder, manslaughter, and heinous offences that have been tried during the recent assizes in Ireland, and of the convictions recorded; and a Copy of any opinions of the judges or Law Officers of the Crown as to the causes of any failure of justice, and of any recommendations made by them?

Sir MICHAEL HICKS-BEACH

, in reply, said, that the assizes would not terminate until the 8th of next month, and it would be better for the hon. Member to defer his Question until a later date. He had no objection if the House wished it to give the Returns; but he was not, however, sure that it would be advisable to produce any opinions of the Judges or Law Officers of the Crown as to the cause of any failure of Justice and of any recommendation made by them.
