HC Deb 31 July 1876 vol 231 c117
MR. JACOB BRIGHT

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether the attention of the Colonial Office has been called to a Petition complaining of misgovernment, presented by the Inhabitants of British Honduras to the Legislative Council, and refused by the Lieutenant Governor, Major Mundy, on the alleged ground that the language was not sufficiently respectful; and, whether the grievances complained of were not numerous, and of a serious nature?

MR. J. LOWTHER

Sir, the attention of Her Majesty's Government has been drawn to the matter, and I am bound to say that, having read it, in my opinion, the language of the Petition hardly appears to be such as need have precluded its reception by the Lieutenant Governor, who, it is only right I should add, acted under the advice of his Council in the course he adopted. After considering the grievances alleged, the Secretary of State does not think that any extensive alterations of the existing fiscal system are practicable; but the whole question of the finance of the colony in question will continue to receive our careful attention.
