HC Deb 04 March 1875 vol 222 cc1184-5
SIR LAWRENCE FALK

asked the President of the Local Government Board, If the power to prevent the use of houses which, from their contiguity to other houses or from structural defect or other causes, are unfit for purposes of habitation, rests with the Board; and, whether the Board have the power to compel local boards of health and urban sanitary authorities to provide proper hospitals for contagious diseases?

MR. SCLATER-BOOTH

Sir, there are several, provisions of law applicable to houses unfit for habitation, but it rests with the local authority, and not with the Local Government Board, to enforce them. As to the second Question of the hon. Baronet, it is within the discretion of local authorities to provide hospitals for contagious diseases, but the Local Government Board has no power to compel them to do so.
