MR. GATHORNE HARDYThe valise equipment was introduced into the Army in 1868. The braces for this equipment were issued in three sizes. In March, 1874, it was reported by the officer commanding the rifle depot that the smallest size was too large for men of 5 feet 5 inches. A fourth size was, therefore, added in October, 1874.
