§ MR. W. JOHNSTONasked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether any negotiations are, or have been, in progress for the admission of Newfoundland into the Dominion of Canada, in accordance with provision 969 made in "The British North America Act, 1867?"
§ MR. J. LOWTHERSince 1869, when proposals for the admission of Newfoundland into the Dominion failed to obtain the sanction of the constituencies of that island, no fresh negotiations have been entered into. The question is, of course, one of undiminished interest to Her Majesty's Government, and to the Governments of the Dominion, and of the colony concerned; but it is understood that public feeling in Newfoundland is not at present distinctly expressed in favour of this step.
