HC Deb 04 May 1874 vol 218 c1589
MR. POWER

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether there is any objection to extend to Ireland the Clauses of the Inland Revenue Act, 33 and 34 Vic, c. 32, allowing the germination of grain for feeding purposes for cattle?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

Sir, I understand that when this permission was given it was not extended to Ireland: partly because it was supposed there was not the same demand for the germination of grain or malt for feeding cattle in Ireland, in consequence of the abundance of green crops: and partly because, on the other hand, it was feared it would be difficult to prevent illicit distillation in Ireland, as the facilities for carrying it on are greater than in England. I will have the matter inquired into again, to see whether it is possible to extend the clauses of the Act to Ireland.
