HC Deb 04 May 1874 vol 218 c1589
MR. KINNAIRD

asked the First Lord of the Treasury. Whether, regard being had to the continued hostilities carried on by the Government of the Netherlands against the Sultan of Acheen, any, and if so what, steps have been taken to carry out the obligations contracted by England towards Acheen under the Treaty of 1819?

MR. DISRAELI

Sir, the Question refers to many complicated transactions. I need only say at present, with reference to the Treaty of 1819 with the Sultan of Acheen, that we are of opinion that under the 1st Article of the Treaty of 1871 between Her Majesty and the King of the Netherlands, it would be morally impossible for us to interfere in that country under existing circumstances.
