HC Deb 07 July 1874 vol 220 c1270

Order for Second Reading read.

Motion made, and Question proposed, "That the Bill be now read a second time."—(The Chancellor of the Exchequer.)

MR. SAMUDA

said, he hoped the Government would not proceed with the second reading of the Bill, as it was one of a highly objectionable character.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

believed the hon. Gentleman was not quite correctly informed as to the object of the Bill. The question had been very carefully considered by the authorities of the Mint, and this Bill was approved by them. If it were read a second time he should move to have it referred to a Select Committee.

MR. ANDERSON

said, that at that late hour they could not properly discuss the Bill, and he should therefore move that the debate be adjourned.

Motion made, and Question put, "That the Debate be now adjourned."—(Mr. Anderson.)

The House divided—Ayes 17; Noes 41: Majority 24.

Original Question put, and agreed to.

Bill read a second time, and committed to a Select Committee.

House adjourned at a quarter after Two o'oclck.
