HC Deb 13 April 1874 vol 218 c496
MR. CHARLES LEWIS

, who had the following Motion on the Paper:— That in the opinion of this House, the continued imposition of the Income Tax, except in time of wars or some great national emergency, is unjust and impolitic, and it is advisable that such Tax should be gradually reduced and further altogether repealed at the earliest possible period, said, he would postpone it until a future occasion. When he gave the Notice his intention was that it should not come on for discussion till after the introduction of the Budget. By some inadvertence it was put upon the Paper for that evening; but he would not proceed with it at present, as he had no desire to forestall the Statement to be made on Thursday by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, or to throw any impediment in his way.
