MAJOR GENERAL SIR PERCY HERBERTobserved that the Secretary of State for War had stated that the soldier's pay would henceforth be 1s. a-day clear, besides rations, and that the pre-engaged soldiers would lose a halfpenny a-day upon the present rate. The right hon. Gentleman had also said that no loss would occur in any case. He hoped that some explanation of that would be given.
§ MR. CARDWELLsaid, that the statement as put was quite accurate; care would be taken that, under no circumstances, should any loss be imposed upon any person.
