MR. M. T. BASSasked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether Government will sanction the appointment of a Committee, in the ensuing Session, to inquire into the present state of the law in regard to imprisonment for small debts?
MR. GLADSTONEsaid, he had consulted the Solicitor General with regard to the appointment of a Committee next Session, and there would be no difficulty in appointing such Committee if the House desired it; but, at the 1518 same time, the Government would rely on the energy, ability, and perseverance of the hon. Member for the conduct of the inquiry.
