HC Deb 22 July 1872 vol 212 c1519
MR. SYNAN

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether the salaries of the Resident Magistrates in Ireland will be included in the scope of the inquiry proposed in reference to the salaries of the Civil Servants of the Crown in Ireland, the same as the salaries of the Police; and, if not, whether he has any objection to include them?

THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTON

said, that having consulted the Chancellor of the Exchequer, he was able to say that the right hon. Gentleman saw no objection to the memorial of the resident magistrates as to their salaries being inquired into by the Commission on Civil Service Salaries in Ireland. In the opinion of the Government, the system of allowances received by resident magistrates in Ireland was extremely unsatisfactory; but it must be understood the Commissioners' inquiry would be directed quite as much to, if not rather to, the readjustment of the emoluments received by the officers as to any claim they may have to additional pay.
