HC Deb 18 July 1872 vol 212 c1368
SIR THOMAS BATESON

asked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether the Earl of Granard has resigned the Lord Lieutenancy of the County Leitrim, or whether he has intimated to the Government his intention of so doing?

MR. GLADSTONE

, in reply, said, that communications from lords-lieutenant of Ireland were addressed not to him, but to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. As he was not aware until two or three hours ago that the Question was to be put, he was unable to give an answer; but if the Question was repeated on Monday he would endeavour to give an answer to it.

SIR THOMAS BATESON

Then, Sir, I beg to give Notice that if the right hon. Gentleman's reply is not satisfactory, I will ask him whether it is the intention of Her Majesty's Government to remove from the Lord Lieutenancy of the county of Leitrim this now notorious disturber of law and order in Ireland?
