§ CAPTAIN ARCHDALLasked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether the cost incurred by Colonel Hillier, Deputy Inspector General of Constabulary, in the actions brought against him for his illegal proceedings at Londonderry City in December 1870, were paid by Her Majesty's Government out of the public funds?
THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTON, in reply, said, that when legal costs were incurred by officers of the Government in the execution of their duty, they were generally defrayed out of the Vote for Law Charges. That, however, could not be done without the sanction of the Law Officers of the Treasury, and it was not yet decided whether the costs incurred by Colonel Hillier should be paid out of that fund or not.
