§ MR. DIXONasked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether any despatches have been sent to the Government of the United States since the publication of the American Case on the Alabama Claims; and, if so, whether he would object to their being at once laid upon the Table of the House?
MR. GLADSTONEI am sorry to say that it was not in the power of Her Majesty's Government, consistently with their duty, to present any communications to the Government of the United States since the publication of the American Case in the Alabama Claims. I sympathize with the desire of my hon. Friend, and I can assure him that the Government will be as well pleased as himself when they can find it possible, consistently with their duty, to present the communications.
