HOLTasked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, as he has stated that Mr. Clarke Jervoise is not accredited to the Pope, To inform the House what position that gentleman holds at Rome in connection with the Foreign Office; what are the duties which he is there established to discharge; and, whether Mr. Clarke Jervoise has received any and what general instructions for his guidance from Her Majesty's Government?
§ VISCOUNT ENFIELDMr. Jervoise has no definite position at Rome, but would report to the Foreign Office any information which might be communicated to him directly or indirectly in regard to the relation of the Papal Government with foreign Powers. Beyond this, he has no general instructions, and his duties, as so defined, are understood, though not prescribed in writing.
§ MR. VANCEI wish to ask whether the Pope has any diplomatic agent in 841 this country on the same terms as Mr. Jervoise is at Rome?
