HC Deb 21 March 1871 vol 205 cc339-40
MR. F. WALPOLE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty, If he will lay upon the Table of the House the Report of Mr. Reed (late Chief Constructor of the Navy) on his survey of the "Megæra?"

MR. GOSCHEN

Sir, it frequently seems that other people know more of what is passing in the Admiralty than the Admiralty itself, judging from the way in which they are primed with certain matters that have not always occurred. I believe there has been no survey, and that the Admiralty has no such Report. Even if there had been, I think I should refuse to produce it; and I think the practice of finding out through the employés what is passing in the offices and asking for Papers ought to be checked by the House.
