HC Deb 15 August 1871 vol 208 c1657
MR. BOWRING

called attention to the importance of this Bill, which had been introduced on the recommendation of the Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, in order to cure a defect with regard to the qualification of voters, and asked the President of the Poor Law Board, Whether, under the circumstances, it would not be better that this Bill should be withdrawn and a similar measure introduced next Session under the responsibility of the Government?

MR. STANSFELD

said, the Government were of opinion that this was a subject of such importance that it should be dealt with by them rather than a private individual. They recognized the necessity of legislation on the subject, and were prepared to consider it during the Recess with the view of introducing next Session such a Bill as the circumstances required.
