HC Deb 08 March 1870 vol 199 cc1480-1
SIR CHARLES WINGFIELD

said, he would beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether it is true that Income Tax has been charged upon subscriptions to the Bengal Orphan Fund, such subscriptions having hitherto been exempt, as of the nature of premiums on life insurance; and, if so, what is the reason of the change?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

There is no clause, Sir, in the Income Tax Acts which exempts the subscriptions to charities from the payment of income tax, although they may be considered in some degree pari materia with life insurances. They were, by an error, exempted in the India House; but that error having been discovered, it has been corrected.
