HC Deb 08 March 1870 vol 199 c1478
CAPTAIN DAWSON-DAMER

said, he wished to ask the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether his attention has been directed to the expediency of assimilating the Law of Ireland to that of Scotland with respect to the finding of verdicts in cases in which unanimity cannot be obtained?

MR. CHICHESTER FORTESCUE

, in reply, said, he greatly doubted whether so great a change as that mentioned in the Question of the hon. and gallant Member could be made except in a general change of the law applicable to the United Kingdom. He should have been prepared to give a further opinion on the subject; but considering that in a day or two a general statement would be made to the House regarding measures for the better prevention of crime in Ireland, it was not, therefore, desirable to enter further into the subject at present.
