HC Deb 07 March 1870 vol 199 c1367
MR. STACPOOLE

said, he wished to ask the hon. Member for Truro, with reference to the statement he has made upon the subject, Whether Officers and Soldiers permitted to wear beards in India, on sanitary grounds, will be compelled to shave them off on landing with their regiments in our colder climate?

CAPTAIN VIVIAN

In reply, Sir, to the Question of my hon. Friend, I have to state that, as it has not been considered necessary to sanction the wearing of beards in the Army at home for any sanitary reason, I presume that officers and soldiers on their return from India will be obliged to conform to the Queen's Regulations in that respect.
